Alabama Crimson Tide guard Aden Holloway arrested on marijuana charges

Tuscaloosa, Alabama (Reuters) - University of Alabama men's basketball guard Aden Holloway was arrested on Monday and charged with first-degree possession of marijuana for more than one kilogram and failure to affix a tax stamp, according to court records reported by ESPN and Fox News.[1][2]

A search of Holloway's apartment uncovered approximately 2.1 pounds of marijuana packaged in plastic bags, prepackaged portions and vacuum-sealed bags, along with $400 cash in a jacket, the complaint stated.[1][2] Prosecutors cited evidence of drug transactions on his phone, including texts from individuals planning to meet "after the season."

The search warrant was obtained following complaints to police, who also inspected trash outside the apartment. Holloway's attorney described the search as unconstitutional and vowed to contest the evidence in court.[1][2]

Holloway, 21, was booked into Tuscaloosa County Jail at 9:48 a.m. local time and released at 10:45 a.m. after posting $5,000 bond.[1][2]

A guard in his third season with Alabama after a freshman year in 2023-24, Holloway has started games this season, contributing as the team's second-leading scorer at 16.8 points per game alongside 3.8 assists and 2.8 rebounds. He shot 48.1 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from three-point range.[1]

Alabama, seeded No. 4 in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, defeated No. 13 Hofstra in Friday's first-round game and faces No. 4 Texas Tech on Sunday for a Sweet 16 berth. Holloway scored 18 points in the team's 80-79 SEC Tournament quarterfinal loss to Ole Miss. Coach Nate Oats indicated Holloway is unlikely to rejoin the team for subsequent rounds.[1][2]

In June 2024, the NCAA Division I Council removed marijuana from its list of banned substances for championships and postseason football.[3]
