Rapinoe faults Auriemma for missing racial representation duty
Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird criticized UConn women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma after his postgame shouting match with South Carolina coach Dawn Staley in the NCAA Final Four semifinal on April 3, 2026. Rapinoe said Auriemma, as a prominent white man in the sport, carries an added responsibility for positive representation in a predominantly Black space. Auriemma later apologized on social media for his conduct.
The altercation occurred at the end of UConn's game against South Carolina at the Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Auriemma cited frustration over an alleged lack of pregame handshake from Staley, though video showed them shaking hands. Bird, a former UConn player under Auriemma, called his actions wrong and disappointing on the couple's podcast but noted his subsequent apology.
Auriemma has coached UConn to 11 NCAA titles, establishing the program as a dynasty. Staley has built South Carolina into a powerhouse, reaching the national championship game after defeating UConn, though the Gamecocks lost to UCLA. Bird won four WNBA titles with the Seattle Storm; Rapinoe captained the U.S. women's national soccer team to two World Cup victories before retiring.
"Listen, I think what Coach Auriemma did last night was obviously wrong and disappointing," Bird said. Rapinoe added that Auriemma's success demands he lead by example in allyship: "As a highly successful White figure in this space, there’s an added responsibility to lead by example in allyship and stewardship of the game."
